What is Cordyceps?

Cordyceps is a mushroom that has been used in China for more than 2000 years, because of the powerful properties that this mushroom possesses. The mushroom used to be so valuable that only the emperor in China was allowed to use it. Cordyceps literally means 'club head', a reference to the shape of the mushroom.

In China, this mushroom is called 'Dong Chong Xia Cao', or 'Winterworm Summer Grass'. Why this special description? Cordyceps is not just any mushroom. Originally it is a fungus that parasitizes on caterpillars and insects. By 'winter worm summer grass' is meant that a worm in the winter transforms into a plant in the summer.

A parasitic fungus

Cordyceps grows in the wild by using an insect as a host. Thanks to the fungi, the caterpillar mummifies in the soil, after which a fruiting body grows out of the body. The fungus thrives best at high altitudes (above 3000 meters), such as on the high plateaus in China, Nepal and Tibet. Traditionally, Cordyceps was harvested by hand for medicinal use.

Do you hate the use of animal ingredients? Fortunately, this fungus can also be cultivated without using caterpillars. Today, the fungus is mainly grown on a substrate of grains, for example soy or rice. The survival of the caterpillars is thus preserved. Another advantage of cultivated Cordyceps is that it does not contain heavy metals and/or chemicals, which can occur in the wild. Cultured Cordyceps is of very pure quality and gives a more reliable result.

How Cordyceps works

In traditional Chinese medicine, the mushroom is known for its strengthening properties. It has been known for centuries to give the body an energy boost, strengthen stamina and have a beneficial effect on the immune system and libido. The fungus is said to have a strengthening effect on the endurance of athletes, among others. It is rumored that during the 1992 Olympics, the Chinese team used Cordyceps. Several world records were then broken.

Active ingredients

The fungus contains a number of special active ingredients that offer benefits for us. Cordyceps contains large amounts of proteins, amino acids, cordycepine, vitamins, minerals and sterols. The substances that really make this mushroom so special are cordycepine, cordyceps acids (6%) and polysaccharides.

Cordycepine is used in a drug (cyclosporine) that is commonly used to suppress the immune system in organ transplants. Cordyceps acid fights free radicals and helps improve blood flow in the body. Finally, polysaccharides are carbohydrates that we need to function optimally. Unfortunately, our bodies cannot make them on their own. That is why it is important that we get polysaccharides through food and supplements.

Cordyceps experiences

What do you use Cordyceps mushroom for? You can use the mushroom for:

  • General improvement in physical condition
  • Inhibition of aging process
  • For fatigue and exhaustion
  • Chronic stress
  • To improve libido and fertility

Does Cordyceps have side effects?

Cordyceps is generally safe as long as the directions for use are followed. However, the supplement is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation (due to insufficient data on safety). At very high doses, some intestinal complaints may arise. Do you take medication? In that case, always consult with your doctor whether it is wise to use the mushroom. Certain drugs, such as corticosteroids, can be affected by this mushroom. In addition, Cordyceps can enhance the effect of blood thinners and medicines for high blood pressure.

How do you use Cordyceps?

The best way to use Cordyceps is to use an extract, for example in the form of capsules. Why choose an extract? This is because an extract is many times more concentrated than a powder. They contain a higher concentration of active substances (polysaccharides), making the effect even more powerful.
